New Grad? How to find your first IT job

Write a resume with impact!

Finding your first job after leaving school, college or university is probably the hardest job hunting exercise you'll ever face – especially in this economy. If you approach it properly, work hard and put together a great resume you’ll have an advantage over other first time job seekers.

Resume - your resume is the key to interviews – is your work experience light due to 4 years of schooling? Focus on these areas:

Work History

  • Highlight in detail all co-op / internship work – describe the project, challenges you faced and how you overcame it, and list all technologies you worked with.

Hobbies

  • Forget about rock climbing and mountain biking (although cool!) these won’t help you get a job. Have you built any apps for fun, are you a member of a technology user group, do you frequent tech blogs? List all of these – it shows that you passionate about development and see it as a lifestyle not just a job.

Courses

  • Listing the details of your degree isn’t enough as a new grad – highlight a few key courses and go into detail about those (especially if you spent a semester building an app for a course). List the course, the project, problems you solved and all related technologies you learned and used.
